The world of Cowboy Bebop is an expansive one. Man has achieved quick and easy space travel, and the entire solar system was opened up for him. However, the technology that allowed him to soar into the heavens also devastated the only home he had ever known for so long. In 2022, the malfunction of an experimental warp gate destroyed the moon, creating an asteroid field surrounding the planet and bathed the earth in radiation. As a result, most of Earth's population relocated to colonies on the inner planets, Mars, the Asteroid belt, and the moons of Jupiter.
Since the solar-system has been completely opened to travel via the gates, Mars has become the central hub of transportation and commerce, and boasts the majority of the human population. However,system-spanning crime syndicates have control over many planetary governments and the Inter-Solar System Police, or ISSP, limiting the effectiveness in handling crime. As a result, a bounty system was instituted and vigilante justice has become prevalent.
Earth: Since the gate accident, Earth, has become an inhospitable wasteland. A veil of moon fragments shrouds the earth. Ruined cities dot the landscape, and frequent meteor strikes from moon debris scar the landscape on a daily basis. The few communities and habitations that remain are usually underground, and the people live more primitive lifestyles.
Mars: Mars has become the core of human civilization since the gate disaster. Though much of the planet remains unterraformed, human cities and settlements dot the landscape in pockets of life-sustainable atmosphere, artifically generated, and connected to each other by glass tubes with roads. Most of the major crime syndicates, as well as the ISSP is based out of Mars as well as much of humanity's industry.
Asteroid Colonies: In much the same way that Mars was colonized, humans have also colonized several of the larger asteroids in the Milky Way's asteroid belt. Many of the colonies are named for cities that once stood on Earth, such as Tijuana. Each has an artificial atmosphere, as with Mars, but most tend to be more run-down and lawless than some of the larger colonies on planets.
Jupiter's Moons: Many of Jupiter's moons boast colonies, and some have more than one. The largest and most heavily populated of these is Ganymede, which is predominantly oceanic.
